Every day money dies and money is born. Through time money evolves to take different forms. The blockchain technology facilitates the creation of new forms of ‘money’ and the evolutionary process is speeding up. However not all ‘cryptos’ can become money. How will money die and be created going forward? What will these mean for the role of banks?

Which ‘cryptos’ can become money, which will fail to do so and how governments will play a role in the next evolution of money is the subject for discussion. Join Professor Russell Napier and a panel of guests at the cutting edge of the evolution of fintech and new money solutions to learn what the future of money might look like.

Russell Napier: Host

Professor Russell Napier is author of The Solid Ground investment report for institutional investors and co-founder of the investment research portal ERIC- a business he now co-owns with D.C. Thomson.  Russell has worked in the investment business for over 30 years and has been advising global institutional investors on asset allocation since 1995. Russell is author of the book Anatomy of The Bear: Lessons From Wall Street’s Four Great Bottoms (‘a cult classic’ according to the FT) and is founder and course director of The Practical History of Financial Markets at The Edinburgh Business School.

Russell is Chairman of Mid Wynd International Investment Trust a GBP500m market cap. closed end investment vehicle listed on the London Stock Exchange. He is a member of the investment advisory committees of three fund management companies, Cerno Capital, Kennox Asset Management and Bay Capital.

 In 2014 Russell founded the charitable venture The Library of Mistakes a business and financial history library in Edinburgh that now has branches in India and Switzerland.

Russell has degrees in law from Queen’s University Belfast and Magdalene College Cambridge. He is a Fellow of The CFA Society of the UK and is an Honorary Professor at The University of Stirling and a Visiting Professor at Heriot-Watt University. He is a contributing columnist for The Toronto Star newspaper. His second book – The Asian Financial Crisis 1995-1998: Birth of the Age of Debt- was published in July 2021.


Nicola Anderson: Speaker

Nicola has years of experience in financial services regulation where her focus was on conduct regulation and supporting the delivery of good consumer outcomes in retail markets. She worked for the FCA across a range of financial sectors with experience supervising firms

such as Retail Banks, Credit Unions, Building Societies and smaller Intermediaries.

Nicola started her career in the retail and hospitality industry. She understands the challenges of being a start up through previous experiences of running her own business.

She’s an advocate for the consumer and a believer in diversity of thought, fairness and inclusion.

Nicola became CEO at FinTech Scotland in January 2021 after a 6 months secondment from the FCA.


Devina Paul: Speaker

Devina is CFO of Zumo, the Edinburgh based self-sovereign wallet which allows your money and cryptocurrency to work seamlessly together.

Devina has 20 years’ experience as a finance professional and has spent the last 10 years working with entrepreneurs and founding teams to prepare their businesses for investment, scale, high growth and exit. She has multiple exits and funding rounds under her belt and deep experience of putting in processes and operations to facilitate growth and scale, building best in class finance teams and working with founders to achieve their goals.

As well as her work with Zumo, Devina is an early-stage investor and co-founder of Galvanise Capital, an angel investment syndicate. She has several board NED and advisory roles, is a trustee Re:Generate which focuses on supporting purpose in business and is an advisor to One Tech, an organisation working with underrepresented entrepreneurs. She is also a keen advocate of financial well-being and accessibility as well as hosting workshops around getting investment and providing investment.


Simon Watson: Speaker

Simon was appointed as the Head of Youth Banking, Natwest Group in March 2021, and is Chairman of fintech - NatWest RoosterMoney.

Simon is also the Executive Sponsor for the Climate Change agenda for Retail Banking and group sponsor of the Male Allies Programme. He joined the bank in 2011 as part of the Sustainable Banking team. He held a variety of senior roles within communications and marketing before becoming the Director of Communications and Brand Development for the Group until 2016.

Simon moved to join Retail Banking as Managing Director for Royal Bank of Scotland, then adding responsibility for Ulster Bank NI and then Royal Bank of Scotland business in England & Wales, before his most recent appointment as Head of Youth. Prior to working in banking Simon worked on social and economic policy in the NGO sector.
