Edinburgh climbs 13 places in latest Global Green Finance Index

Edinburgh has risen 13 places to number 22 in Z-Yen’s latest Global Green Finance Index, highlighting its growing status as a centre of excellence for green finance and sustainable investment, and placing it ahead of global financial centres includes Beijing, Tokyo and Chicago.

Edinburgh’s burgeoning green finance reputation has been underpinned by the work of the Scottish Taskforce on Green and Sustainable Financial Services, a joint initiative by the Scottish Government, the Edinburgh-based Global Ethical Finance Initiative, and Scottish Financial Enterprise, which aims to demonstrate global leadership in implementing the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) roadmaps.

London remains first in the index and has improved its ranking, demonstrating the strength of the UK’s international green finance credentials. Glasgow also features on the green finance index in 52nd position, while its main success was in the broader Global Financial Centres Index, released in September, where it rose a further nine places to 42nd position.

Commenting on the news, Sandy Begbie CBE, Chief Executive, Scottish Financial Enterprise, said:

“The latest Z-Yen indexes show further progress for Scotland’s two main financial centres and reminds us that both have their own unique characteristics and key strengths. While Glasgow continues to build its reputation as a major hub for technology and innovation, Edinburgh is using its long-standing heritage in banking, investment and asset management and its renowned university ecosystem to strengthen its standing among the world’s leading green finance centres.

“The fact that we have two truly outstanding financial centres, closely connected and easily accessible to one another, is something we must continue to shout about. They are part of the same ecosystem which as a whole benefits from its close proximity to London, so when you invest in Edinburgh or Glasgow, you are investing in this ecosystem, which is by every measure one of the best in the world.”
